Sports in the 1960s is exciting ground! Individual competitors in a variety of sports, such as golf and tennis abound, becoming immensely popular. College and professional teams proliferated, grew, and changed – the transformation of football is a good example. American athletes set Olympic records from Rome to Tokyo to Mexico City, while technology beamed the Games to American audiences who watched on television for the first time, giving new meaning to the idea of “spectator sports.” In the 1960s, amateur and professional sports alike measured the athlete’s drive and grit to succeed the old-fashioned way – without shortcuts.
