Remembering an Era of AchievementSimilar to engineering and technology, the sciences category is vast; and includes such disciplines as biology, chemistry and geology, as well as the “science” of practitioners in such fields as medicine and surgery. The 1960s show the transfer of leadership in most of the sciences after 1945 to the United States which now established the research frontiers and norms of scientific inquiry once dependent on Europe. The period saw the continuation from the 1950s of the federal government as a major patron of science in American universities which flowered in the 1960s as research hubs, along with foundations and private companies. Together, these produced spectacular advances in basic scientific knowledge; and breakthroughs with commercial applications that improved the quality of life in the United States and around the world.
